Xpose was the first project I have completed since graduating from Ryerson. Focusing on the face as the insignia of identity and individuality, this series was meant as a colorful, visual exploration of the human psychological struggle with individuation. Suspended in an unknown temporal and special setting,
some of the faceless characters are portrayed as caught in an instant of self confrontation and desperate attempt to exhume a dose of personality from beneath the palimpsest of cultural uniformity, while others are asleep in bliss ignorance of their lost identities.
Xpose has been a further continuation of my directorial and theatrical mode of working from Maskarada series. For this project, I’ve constructed a life-size painted set, including a 14 ft x 16 ft mural, to serve as a background for the photo shoot. I eagerly experimented with stage makeup and costumes to create characters of simultanousely beauty and dread.
Xpose was exhibited in a solo show at L’Arte, Toronto; part of Contact 2003.
